Hi, I'm Maze, and I practiced Kuk Sool Won an ancient Korean martial art for 14 years. This journey did not only shape my physical abilities but has also profoundly influenced my personal growth and philosophy.
The Beginning
My journey began when I was just nine years old, curious about martial arts and heavily influenced by my father to start a class. Kuk Sool Won, with its rich Korean heritage, caught my eye. From the moment I stepped onto the mat, I knew I'd found something special. The discipline, respect, and camaraderie were unlike anything I'd experienced before.
Learning the Basics
In the initial years, I focused on the fundamentals. I learned the stances, basic strikes, and the importance of balance and form. But what truly fascinated me were the joint locks. Understanding how to manipulate joints to control an opponent without causing severe harm was both an art and a science. This skill taught me precision, patience, and the importance of control over brute force.
Delving Deeper: Pressure Points and forms
As I progressed, my training delved into the study of pressure points. This was eye-opening; learning how to use these points for self-defense or healing was a testament to the depth of KSW. Alongside, I practiced forms or "hyungs," which are sequences of movements that embody the essence of KSW. Each form was like learning a new dance, yet each step was imbued with martial intent, teaching me strategy, timing, and muscle memory.
Sparring: The Heart of Combat
Sparring was where I truly tested my skills and achieved my best. It wasn't just about fighting; it was about applying what I learned in a dynamic, ever-changing scenario. Sparring taught me to adapt, to think on my feet, and to respect my opponent. It wasn't just physical; it was mental chess where strategy could outmatch strength.
Teaching Others
One of the most rewarding parts of my journey has been teaching. After earning my black belt then to achieve my 2nd degree black belt, I started instructing classes. Teaching KSW to others was like passing on a legacy. It enriched my understanding of the art because explaining techniques forces you to dissect and understand them at a deeper level. I enjoyed watching my students grow, seeing them master joint locks, apply pressure points safely, or perform a form with grace and power.
The Philosophy
Kuk Sool Won isn't just about physical prowess; it's about character. The martial art has taught me discipline, humility, and the importance of community. Every class begins and ends with a bow, a simple act that reminds us of respect, not just for the art but for each other.
Where I Stand Now
After 14 years I decided to hang up my belt in KSW and widen my skill set where I learnt kick boxing and Wing Chun, I trained in this style for just over a year.
My journey is far from over; there's always more to learn, more to teach. But as I look back, I see a path filled with growth, challenges, and countless moments of connection both in and out of the dojang.
Martial arts has given me a framework for life, skills that extend beyond the physical, and a family of practitioners who share the same passion.
Present day
As I continue in my mixed wrestling career I am forevermore trying to better myself. I am now starting a new chapter in Brazilian jiu jitsu, watch this space!
